Message from Professor Morizane Okayama University Hospital Dermatology is responsible for regional medical care by combining 58 related hospitals from the Nishi-Hyogo area to the Chugoku / Shikoku area. We fulfill our responsibilities as last fort hospital in the treatment of a wide variety of diseases ranging from severe cases of common diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, malignant tumors such as melanoma and cutaneous lymphoma, to designated intractable diseases such as collagen disease, pemphigus and pemphigoid. There are a total of 5,800 dermatological inpatients annually, of which about 70% require surgery. In addition, there are approximately 400 surgical cases per year. In this medical treatment system, our department focuses on training dermatologists with high clinical skills that can be used in general medicine, and on developing human resources aiming for exploratory dermatology. Dermatology involves both the medical and surgical fields, but a dermatologist who has both qualities as a generalist and a specialist for a specific disease can be used daily. I would like to nurture through medical treatment, conferences and meetings. In undergraduate education, lectures will focus on typical diseases of the dermatology and skin complications of other diseases. Education to raise doctors with the right knowledge of dermatology is one of our important missions. We tell the appeal of dermatologists: “Understand the whole body through skin findings.” The most basic skill in dermatological practice is the skill of naked-eye examination, so in dermatology training, we focus on observing rash and conduct ward and outpatient training. At the same time, you will have as much training time as possible for skin surgery, and you will surely acquire the basic skills such as skin suturing necessary in the real clinic. In post-graduate education, all graduates who choose dermatology should aim to obtain a dermatology specialist quantification. Dermatologists are required to acquire advanced specialized knowledge, diagnosis and treatment techniques for various skin diseases based on basic training in general medicine, and to enhance medical treatment content with a broad perspective and knowledge on related fields. In addition, we recommend that newcomers acquire sub-specialities as well as a dermatology specialist quantification. I believe that your sub-specialities enhance your dermatologist’s life by having something outstanding, such as dermatology, basic research, collagen disease treatment, bacterial infection, viral infection, cutaneous lymphoma, skin laser treatment, and so on. It is also the mission of Super Global University to train young people who can work internationally. I would like to encourage young people interested in studying abroad to become international academia dermatologists. We will maintain exchanges with overseas dermatologists established by our predecessor professor and make them choices for young study abroad destinations. In addition, I had been studying at the University of California, San Diego, Dermatology Course (Professor Richard Gallo) for two years since 2007, and my colleagues at that time have now become professors around the world. The international exchange that I built during my time studying abroad will also further support young dermatologists’ internationalization. If you are interested in our department, please feel free to contact us and come visit. I will tell you the charm of Okayama University Dermatology.
